Thursday Thoughts: Hard Stuff and Innocence

Earlier this week I talked about Taylor Swift and how I’m pretty sure Abby is going to love her once she figures out who she is. I mentioned Swift’s song, “Mean,” and how Abby likes it so much; every time we’re in the car she tells me to put on one of the country stations in case they play it. Overall, I’m a huge country fan. I never would have started listening if it weren’t for my husband, but he had me hooked pretty quickly and now I can’t get enough. I love the patriotic and Christian themes that permeate so many of the songs, and the honesty of the writers in sharing about their own lives through their music. Not that...

Monday Musings: An Open Letter to Taylor Swift (and no, I’m not bashing you)

Dear Miss Swift, Last week you were interviewed on Regis and Kelly and said some pretty impressive things about what it means to be a role model: ‘You have to be conscious of that.  If you’re choosing to put out music and be out there in the public you realize you have to be cautious of the fact that you are a part of  the raising of the next generation and you do have an impact on that.  So, choose your outfits, your words and your actions carefully.  I think it matters, I think it really does.  You can pretend it doesn’t, but it does.’ I have to be honest–there’s a cynical side of me that fears we’ll see you fall into the same trap that...
